But her look as the dramatic Disney villainess was not easy to achieve – the actress revealed that her transformation was a process of trial and error.

“The creation of it took a little time to figure out how to do the horns,” Jolie said at a press event for the film. “Even how to get them on my head and how do they stay on the head.”

“We had different horns. At first they were too heavy, then we got them softer, then we found ones that would snap off because I kept banging into things, and, you know, it just all slowly came together,” she said, explaining that the finished result was an elaborate contraption that required a specific hairdo to keep it steady. “It was a headpiece, of course, with the horns. It wasn’t like a headband. So we kind of put … my hair in these balls, and then you put the headpiece over and you pull the braids through and then you use (them) to anchor it.”

The Horns

During an interview with ITN, Jolie confessed that for her character’s gorgeous, leather-wrapped horns, the costume team looked in one unlikely place: “Actually we went online and found these great leather workers and people who do these more, kind of, elegant fetish clothes.” Once they had a rough design, Jolie told Hitfix that it took a bit of time to engineer horns that could stay securely on her head but would not hinder her too much while walking on set.

The Hair

When Angelina Jolie hairstyles were not being braided and bunned to help anchor those Maleficent horns, she says that the hair team experimented with different hairstyles. “We had feathered hair at one point,” Jolie told Hitfix. “We went that crazy. We were like”, ‘Well, she’s a bird. Maybe she has feather hair.’

Instructions:

1. Divide the wet hair on your head into 2 parts.

2. Grab a small section of hair on both sides from the area the horn will be sticking out. Be sure to leave hair down for the braided pieces.

3. Use hairspray to make your hair thick enough to create strong horns. Repeat this step on the other side.

4. Take the first section and braid lightly as you wrap the end of the hair back towards your scalp to the desired height for your horns. Bobby pin the end to the base that will be the inside of your horn. Repeat on the other side in your head.

5. Put 2 braid hair sections to a part of horns.

6. Use a bobby pin to secure the hair in place. Hairspray and repeat on other horns.

7. Next, take another section of hair from the back of your head. Wrap this piece in bigger loops to finish creating the horn shape.

8. Wrap the two braided pieces around the base of the horns and your look is complete!
